Locating an Android smartphone

Locating an Android smartphone is simple, if certain features of the device are active. So, to start with, make sure that the phone has a Google account associated with it. To do this, launch the Settings app, which you can find on the home screen, and select the entries Users and accounts > Google.

If you find this item and the Gmail address among those listed, you don’t have to do anything else. Otherwise, from the Settings app screen, tap on Users and accounts > Add account > Google. Then type in the login credentials for your Google account, following the on-screen instructions and you’re done. Are you unsure about this procedure? Then check out this guide of mine dedicated to the topic.

Next, make sure that your device has access to the Internet, preferably through the SIM data network, as it allows, in the absence of Wi-Fi networks, to keep the smartphone connected to the network. If you don’t know how to do that, you can consult my guide on how to connect to the Internet via mobile.

In general, you can turn on the SIM data network by launching the Settings app and choosing Wireless and networks > Mobile network. Then move the toggle under the Mobile Data heading to ON. For wireless networks, in the Wireless and networks section, select Wi-Fi and move the toggle switch under the Wi-Fi heading to ON. Finally, you just have to choose a wireless network and enter the password to connect to it.

Location Services: Find My Device

Another feature that needs to be activated is geolocation, which can be reached from the Settings app and by selecting Security and Privacy > Location Services: all you have to do is activate the item Access to my location and you’re done.

At this point, activate Google’s Find My Device service, which is essential for locating your phone. To do this, launch the Settings app and select Security & Privacy > Find My Device. Then move the toggle from left to right next to the word ON.

Finally, from the web, sign in with your Google account on the Play Store website and press the gear icon, which you find in the upper right corner. In the list of devices connected to your Google account, locate the one you need to track, among those you see in the list, and activate the Show in menus box, in the Visibility column.

You can use mobile phone tracker apps.

If you’ve followed what I told you in the previous chapter to the letter, it’s time to verify the location of your boyfriend’s Android phone, using Google’s native Find My Device tool. You can act either from the web panel or via the dedicated app, which can be downloaded from the Play Store.

Since the procedure to use this tool is identical on both platforms, I’m going to talk about how to locate Android phone via the Find My Device web platform. To get started, go to the link I provided and sign in with the credentials of the Google account associated with the phone.

Once this is done, use the icons of the devices connected to the account to view the one you want to locate. All you have to do is wait a few moments for its location to be shown on the map. If this doesn’t happen, probably some cell phone feature, essential for the correct operation of this tool, is not active. In any case, you will be shown the last known position, thanks to data synchronization with Maps.

If you want to intervene remotely on the located phone, you can press the buttons shown: Play audio to make it ring, Lock device to lock it or Reset device to erase all stored data.

Find My iPhone: Localization

If your boyfriend owns an iPhone, the procedure to follow requires you to activate some features on the device before you can use the native Find My iPhone tool, which I’ll tell you about in the next chapters.

The essential steps you need to take in order to use Find My iPhone require, first of all, the association of an iCloud account with the phone. To do so, all you have to do is launch the Settings app, which you can find on the home screen, and click on the Log in to iPhone item at the top.

At this point, sign in with your iCloud account or create one, following the on-screen instructions. In case you have any doubts about this procedure, my advice is to carefully read the procedures you’ll find in this guide.

With that done, the next step is to enable location services on your iPhone. In the Settings app, choose the entries Privacy > Localization. At this point, move the toggle from left to right, so that the Localization item is set to ON.

Now, you need to make sure that the Internet connection is on. My recommendation is to use the data network, so you can be sure that your iPhone is always connected to the Internet. To do this, from the Settings app, choose Mobile and set the toggle under the Cellular Data heading to ON. In case you want to keep Wi-Fi on as well, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and enable the Wi-Fi option. Then choose the wireless network you want to connect to and enter the password to access it.

Finally, you need to activate the Find My iPhone feature from the Find My iPhone menu in the iOS settings. Then, launch the Settings app and select [your name] > iCloud > Find My iPhone. Then, move the toggles next to Find My iPhone and Send Last Location to ON.

Now that you know all the features that need to be enabled on your boyfriend’s iPhone for it to be located, it’s time to see how Find My iPhone works. This service from Apple is available via both web platform and app, which can be downloaded from the App Store.

Since the usage procedures are similar on both platforms, I will explain how to act from the web browser to locate your iPhone. First, go to the link I provided and sign in with the iCloud account associated with the phone. I recommend that you do this even before the phone is lost, so that you can make the browser you use on your PC as trustworthy, because you will receive a PIN on your smartphone every time you try to gain unauthorized access.

That done, press on the Find iPhone icon and wait for the map to load with the location of all your Apple devices. To locate one specifically, select its name from the dropdown menu at the top and wait a few moments, so that its correct location can be displayed.

In case you want to perform operations on your iPhone remotely, you have the option to make it beep (Make it beep), lock it (Lost Mode) or reset it to factory settings (Initialize iPhone).

In addition to the native Android and iOS features I’ve told you about in the previous chapters, you can also use some third-party apps that allow you to achieve this goal. If your boyfriend has one of these apps installed on his smartphone, you will be able to locate him easily. The essential requirement is that there is an active Internet connection and GPS.
